Introduction (What is malaria?)
  • Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by plasmodium.
  • Transmitted by female Anophelene mosquitoes.
Malaria situation in the World

  • Malaria is one of the most widespread disease in the world.

  • P. vivax has the widest geographic distribution throughout the world.
  • 90 % of the malaria cases occur in Africa and South of Sahara

  • 6.7 % in 6 countries viz., Brazil, Columbia, India, Soloman Islands, Srilanka and Vietnam

Indian Scenario:
  • Malaria has been a major health problem in India.

  • Majority of the infections were due to P.falciparam and P.vivax.

  • There were 75 million malaria cases and 0.8 million deaths in 1947.

  • After launching National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in 1953, there was a dramatic fall in the incidence of malaria cases.

  • implementation of National Anti Malaria Programme (NAMP)in 1958 brought down the no.of deaths to 0.1 million cases annually without any deaths by 1965.
