Anopheles gambiae is the major vector of Plasmodium falciparum and is one of the most efficient malaria vector in the world. The international Anopheles gambiae genome project has completed (Sep 2002) and is now available for molecular entomological studies.
Srain Used in the Genome Project
The A.gambiae PEST strain was chosen for the genome project. The PEST strain is maintained at the Institut pasteur (Paris).
A.gambiae chromosome
contains three polytene chromosomes
Sequencing Centres
- The sequencing of Anophles gambiae genome is undertaken by Celera Genomics, U.S.A
